Scab
By Sheila Callaghan, directed by Lola Pierson
Grad student Anima returns to Los Angeles after a trip home to attend her father’s funeral to find new roommate, Christa, has moved in. After days lying catatonic on her apartment floor, Anima finally stirs when camcorder-clad Christa brings home a peculiar statue of the Virgin Mary found at a neighbor’s yard sale. Bonding over glasses of Jack Daniels, Anima and Christa enter a uniquely impassioned friendship, even co-parenting a hysterical houseplant they christen Susan. But when a new love interest pulls Christa’s attention, Anima feels new heartbreak emerge and old wounds resurface, pushing her to finally learn how to heal.
